CalYOUTH researchers have been following foster youth in California since age 16 or 17, and this memo reports on findings from the fourth wave of the study, when participants were around 23 years old. The research sought to understand whether extending foster care past age 18 affected their outcomes during the transition to adulthood, what factors influence the support they received in extended care, and how living arrangements and other services have influenced their success in early adulthood. The findings cover a diverse array of topics and outcomes, including personal characteristics, family background, education, employment, hardship, health, life skills, social support, sexuality, relationships, and criminal victimization and perpetration, among others.
