Memo from CalYOUTH: Youth Characteristics and Predominant Placement Type Between Age 18 and 21
Providing housing that is appropriate for foster youth based on their individual needs and helps them achieve independence is critical. But few studies have explored how placement decisions are made, what predicts the type of placement, and how this affects foster care outcomes. This study explored youth and system factors associated with the primary placement between ages 18 and 21, with a focus on supervised independent living and transitional housing for nonminor dependents. Findings offer valuable insight into where youth stayed during extended foster care after age 18 and factors related to their placement type.
